Distinguished and Famous people from Mooroolbark

🌿 Edna Walling

Edna Walling developed Bickleigh Vale around her Mooroolbark home from the 1920s, shaping a village in which gardens and cottages formed a connected landscape. Sonning, her first home, was rebuilt after fire; she later lived at The Barn before moving to Queensland in 1967. The project brought together nursery work, design and a group of residents interested in a shared setting. It remains a particularly direct expression of her ideas. A landscape designer’s working home expanded into a place where the relationship between houses, paths, trees and neighbours could be explored at village scale.

Walling also brought garden design to readers through Home Beautiful, using photographs and accessible writing to explain her ideas. She liked garden rooms: spaces linked by paths and sometimes defined by low walls. Her concern for plants extended beyond the garden gate. In The Australian Roadside she argued for retaining native vegetation beside expanding roads and highways, treating those everyday strips of country as worth looking after.

🏉 Sam Mitchell

Sam Mitchell played junior football at Mooroolbark before progressing through Box Hill into Hawthorn’s senior side. His strengths were anticipation, clean handling and the ability to use either side of his body, rather than exceptional running speed. He captained the 2008 premiership team and played in three more premierships from 2013 to 2015. Later he returned to Hawthorn as a coach. The local club connection gives the career an identifiable starting point, preceding the league honours and tactical responsibilities that made him one of the club’s most influential modern figures.
